    6 Reasons to Measure Wettability in Paper and Board Quality Control

    The parameters that are being measured in quality control of paper and board may differ for several reasons; what applications the paper is made for, available instrumentation, traditions etc. If you haven’t thought about measuring wettability and adhesion properties of your paper, here are 6 reasons to start doing so.

    1. Wettability of a paper or board depends on the coatings and treatments done to it. By measuring the wettability, deviations in coatings and treatments can be observed.
    2. Adhesion, deriving from wettability properties, is very important in a number of paper and board-related applications such as printing, coating and packaging. For example the adhesion between paper and ink needs to be tested to verify the subsequent printing quality.
    3. Parallel to measuring wettability and adhesion, other parameters such as absorption and spreading can also be quantified.
    4. Typical wettability and adhesion parameters such as contact angle and surface free energy are highly surface active parameters that respond quickly to any changes in surfaces. Therefore they can be used for example for detecting the surface quality between subsequent processing steps.
    5. Wettability measurements are very suitable for quality control as they are typically quick and simple to perform. Operator generally doesn’t need special knowledge to run tests.
    6. There are a number of standards such as TAPPI T558 to support wettability measurements in paper and board quality control. This standardizes measurement procedures to be able to compare the results between different labs and sites.
